This is a prestigious research position, within a dynamic and highly collaborative international research environment. The role is based at Silicon Quantum Computing Pty Ltd, a start-up company attached to the headquarters of the Centre of Excellence for Quantum Computation and Communication Technology at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia. The company is a unique start-up, being a public-private partnership between industry, government and UNSW Sydney that seeks to commercialise silicon quantum computing technology being developed in Australia – technology that has the potential to revolutionise computing worldwide.

The successful candidate will join the world-leading team of Professor Michelle Simmons, who has an international reputation for developing a radical new technology for building precision single atom qubits in silicon. With the recent demonstration of single atom qubits in natural silicon with world record coherence times and the highest fidelity single shot spin read-out, this group is poised to scale to 10-qubit architectures within the next five years.

This position will provide an ambitious crystal growth expert with a globally unique opportunity to design, characterise and measure multi-qubit devices in silicon towards the development of a silicon-based quantum computer. The MBE expert for atomic electronics will be required to fabricate and measure atomic-scale qubit devices with controlled dopant profiles in silicon. The work will consider scalable 2D and 3D architectures fabricated using a combination of STM lithography and crystal growth by MBE in an ultrahigh vacuum environment. RESPONSIBILITIES

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

Level B

  • Optimisation of silicon crystal growth for prototyping atomically precise multi-qubit devices.
  • Development of Si-28 growth capability and device integration.
  • Operation and maintenance of UHV crystal growth systems.
  • Conduct research aligned with SQC’s overall research agenda under the guidance of the Director SQC/Centre Director.
  • Publishing of both patents and high impact papers in high quality international research journals and presentations at international conferences.
  • Assisting the Centre Director in the supervision of research students to ensure rapid prototyping.
  • Ensure that the work for which they are responsible is carried out in ways, which safeguard the OHS of staff or students in their charge and visitors, including contractors whom they engage.

Level C
In addition to the above:

  • Assisting the Director in the supervision of research staff and students to ensure rapid prototyping.
  • Proactively develop an optimisation program for high device yield.
  • Make a significant contribution to the rapidly accelerating field of quantum information.
  • Broad administrative functions.

Level D
In addition to the above:

  • Assume a significant role in research projects including, where appropriate, leadership of a research team.
  • High level administrative functions.

ESSENTIAL SELECTION CRITERIA

Level B

  • PhD (or equivalent) in experimental physics and/or materials science.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct research at an internationally recognised level in silicon molecular beam epitaxy with proven track record publishing in high quality international journals.
  • Hands-on experience of ultrahigh vacuum systems, clean room processing and/or electrical characterisation at liquid helium temperatures.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team and to co-supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to liaise effectively with all stakeholders.
  • Well-organised, attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to think logically, create solutions and make informed decisions.
  • Ability and willingness to work in a team where credit is shared.
  • Ability and capacity to implement required UNSW health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Ability to implement equal opportunity and diversity policies and programs.

Level C
In addition to the above:

  • Over 3 year’s postdoctoral experience in a related field.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct research with limited supervision at an internationally recognised level in molecular beam epitaxy.
  • Strong international track record in molecular beam epitaxy as demonstrated by publications.
  • Demonstrated experience in supervising honours and postgraduate students.

Level D
In addition to the above:

  • Demonstrated experience conducting independent original/innovative research, actively contributing to the advancement of knowledge in relevant subject area/s at a national and international level.
  • Demonstrated experience in mentoring postdoctoral fellows.
